Adam was told that if he eats the forbidden fruit, he was to die the same day in Genesis 2:17. And yet, Adam ate the fruit and lived to a ripe old age of 930 years (Genesis 5:5). So, why didn’t Adam die like God said he would?
Before we answer this question, you need to know that across the scriptures there are various types of death.
- Death of body like in Genesis 6:7, “So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
- The corruption of the body is also referred to as death in Job 18:13, “It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs.”
- The earthly interests are also called death in Romans 8:6, “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
- Death of the spirit in James 5:20, “let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”
- Eternal state of death like in Ezekiel 25:15 “‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred”.
- Death caused by sin in Ephesians 2:1, “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”
When Adam sinned against God, he died almost every type of death, even though he was created for life. Sin entered causing spiritual isolation from life (God), and due to his earthly interests, his body went through corruption and later died at the age of 930. But thanks to God’s Grace and redemption, his death is not eternal.
