Introduction:

The question of Jesus’ nature as a child is a contentious one: Was Jesus born man or divine? Did His divinity evolve and grow with time, just like His human knowledge and wisdom? Or was He divine at birth?

Argument:

According to Christian doctrine, Jesus is both fully human and fully divine at birth. Let’s examine a few verses that illustrate that position.

Let’s begin with Old Testament prophecies. In the book of the prophet Isaiah, we read: “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel (God is with us)” (Isaiah 7:14)

We also find in the book of Isaiah the following prophecy: “For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; And the government shall be upon His shoulders. And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6).

Furthermore, in the New Testament when the Angel foretells Mary of Jesus’ birth, the angel said: “… The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35)

A little later, Mary visited Elizabeth, who was 6 months pregnant. “And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43)

Conclusion:

The biblical verses reveal Jesus’ divinity from birth. Several key observations underscore this doctrine:

– Isaiah 7:14 emphasises His divine origin through miraculous conception.

– Isaiah 9:6 titles Him “Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father”, affirming His divinity.

– Luke 1:35 declares Jesus the “Son of God,” confirming His divine identity.

– Luke 1:43 shows Elizabeth recognising Jesus as “my Lord”, acknowledging His divinity before birth.

These points collectively affirm Jesus’ divinity from conception.
