The Bible and Science: An Introduction

Many claim that “the Bible was written by ancient and primitive people and has no value to modern people anymore.” Some of the accusations even go further claiming that the Bible is promoting foolishness in reference to Biblical verses that are taken out of their context. One such verse in the first epistle to the Corinthians states that “the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.’, “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:18-19, 27).

Whether the Bible is scientifically credible or not, it would be wise to consider the evidence. In this article, we will list some interesting verses about nature from the Bible, which later scientific advances came to agree with.

Considering the earth, science didn’t discover that the earth hangs on nothing until 1650 CE. Yet, in the Book of Job written 1500 B.C. before the scientific discovery with more than 3000 years, the Bible states “He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.” (Job 26:7, NKJV).

In very recent years, science discovered that everything is composed of things that we can’t see with our own eyes like atoms. In the epistle to the Hebrews written 19 centuries ago, the Bible states “By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” (Hebrews 11:3, NKJV).

In the Book of Isaiah, written around 700 B.C, he states that “it is He who sits above the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22, NKJV). The Bible, thus, states that the earth is spherical maybe 300 years before Aristotle suggested that the earth is like a sphere in his book On the Heavens.

In the book of Psalms, “He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain;” (Psalms 135:7, NKJV). This is when the hydrologic cycle was so well brought by the Bible. The idea of a complete water cycle was not fully understood by science until the seventeenth century.

Modern deep-sea-diving cameras have discovered hot-water vents on the floor of the ocean. This is what the scriptures mention “Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?” (Job 38:16). The springs of the sea were mentioned in the book of Genesis as well: “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.” (Genesis 7:11, NKJV).

Another example is the transmission of light.  We have only recently discovered that light (electromagnetic radiation) has a “way.” In empty space this speed is approximately 186,000 miles per second. 3,500 years ago the scriptures said “where is the way to the dwelling of light?” (Job 38:39, NKJV)

A third example is that of the Plant Life Cycle. Plants need sunlight, water, and minerals in order to grow and to make their own energy and food. If plants do not get sunlight, and yet have water and minerals, they cannot produce chlorophyll. They will then die. It is interesting to notice therefore the chronological order of the Genesis creation. God created light first ” Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light” (Genesis 1:3, NKJV). He then created water “Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” (Genesis 1:6, NKJV). then soil “Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was” (Genesis 1:9, NKJV). and then He created plant life “Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. ” (Genesis 1:11, NKJV).

In what is called the Dark Ages, men did not know what they now know about humanity and the cosmos. They did not know the lock but they possessed the key, which is God. Now, many have excellent descriptions of the lock, but they have lost the key. It makes perfect sense to have the union of both religion and science.
